the world is beautiful and the people are loving

there are many people who
do not know what language they speak in tibet or kuwait,
do not know the difference between a starving guatemalan and
a starving brazilian and a bum who pays for beer with
stolen quarters at their favorite bar.
these people will on occassion donate a dollar fifty a month
to a charity organization;
and drive around in their cars with FREE TIBET stickers
on their bumpers.
they have not done much but they have done enough.
that is how this woman is treated;
men have seen her crying at the end of the
bar and sat next to her and bought her a drink and
some of them have fucked her and they
all walk away thinking to themselves how lucky she was
they were there, and what great guys they
must be for helping her out
in her time of need.
though when they tell the story they forget
her name.
most of them glaze over like a fertilized egg
having let in a single sperm.
they have done their part.
this is true.
they have done more than most people
would think
to do.
an article of note, though:
those of us
who stay in the bar
as often as she does, or more, notice
that she is still starving to death
a thousand miles
away.
