The following is a list of publishers in the West. We have narrowed our scope to bring you information faster. While this list is by no means complete, we will continue to research and bring you information on publishers. Any suggestions or questions can be sent by e-mail to the Guild. Prose under 9,000 words, 3-5 poems. Indicate word count on prose. Include a SASE for notification. Simultaneous submissions are considered as long as the Bellingham Review is notified immediately if work is accepted elsewhere. All work must be previously unpublished. Submissions accepted between October 1-February 1, contest dates may vary. Allow one to six months for reply. No electronic submissions.

Calyx is a journal of art and literature by women. Submissions are accepted only between October 1- December 15. Prose, including essay, should be no more than 5,000 words and double spaced. Poetry no more than 6 poems. Prose and poetry should be submitted separately. Name should appear on each page. A short (50 words or less) Bio should be sent with submission. Include SASE and phone number. No electronic submissions.


Colorado Review

Fiction, Poetry, and Essay. Typed, double spaced. No genre fiction. Full name and address on manuscript. Submit only unpublished work. Submission dates September 1- April 30. Anything submitted outside of those dates will be returned unopened. Include SASE or e-mail address for notification and postage if you want your manuscript returned. No electronic submissions.


Denver Quarterly

Work is published four times a year. No submissions accepted between May 15- September 15. Include adequately stamped SASE.

Submissions accepted only May-Sep, all others returned unread. Accepts poetry, fiction, essays, and art. Include SASE for return of manuscript or reply. 10 poems maximum or one prose piece. Submissions under 10,000 words have a better chance. Simultaneous submissions are fine as long as notification is given of acceptance elsewhere. Editors strongly suggest reading before submitting. Check about possible future themes.

Submissions accepted Sep-May. Notification in 6-8 weeks. Selected work will appear 6-12 months later. 3-5 unpublished poems with cover letter and SASE. Poems a maximum of 40 lines and no more than 10-12 words per line. Short-short stories of about 1200 words, 5 pages. Longer stories for contests only. Simultaneous submissions must be acknowledged.

One story or 3-5 poems or two short-shorts (less than 5 pages each) may be submitted. Must be notified of simultaneous submissions. Former contributors wait one year.

Fiction 4,000 words and under. Poetry 100 lines or less. Critical work should cite references. No simultaneous submissions.

Include SASE for notification. Double-space. Submissions can be "As long and as many as you want." They respond quickly but due to volume of submissions can not offer comments and feedback. No simultaneous submissions. Poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, but no interviews, reviews, or criticism.
