Personal Statement
Originally my career ambition was to be a librarian. I love reading, and I had practically grown up in my neighborhood library. After I graduated college I was lucky enough to get a job with the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library System, working in youth services. After a couple of years it became time for me to decide if I wanted to move up in the system. In order to do so, I needed to get my Master's of Library Sciences. I eventually decided not to, because I realized that what I really loved about working at the library was not teaching a love of reading (although that was satisfying) it was helping connect people with community services and resources. That led me to explore MPA programs. I knew San Francisco State had a great program, and it was a great city for working at a non-profit. My family also lived in San Francisco, so the choice was clear!
I quickly grew to love the hands-on, practical nature of Public Administration. I spent two years coordinating a program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, which was intensely satisfying and challenging. From there I moved to the world of international aid, working for an NGO called Equal Access. Eventually my husband and I decided to make a major chance - we decided to join the Peace Corps! We'll be leaving in the summer of 2008 for 2 years doing business development in Latin America.
You never know where life will take you. I love being open to possibilities and facing new challenges. Working in public administration couldn't be a better field for people who like to problem solve. And mostly, I go home at the end of the day feeling satisfied.
