~~~In contrast to the "modern" American tolet, which is based on the principle of using water to transfer the "waste" to a treatment system, composting toilets are toilet systems that treat human waste by composting and dehydration to produce a useable end product that is a valuable soil additive. They use little or no water to treat toilet wastes on site. Composting toilets come in a variety of designs; all of which provide an enclosed environment for the natural process of aerobic decomposition to take place. Some designs use a "batch" system, meaning that a container is filled and then replaced with an empty container. In this instance, the composting process is completed inside the container itself. Others use a "continual process system" which is in a constant state of decomposing using deposits that help reduce the volume and move downward to be used as fully composted material at a later date.~~~
