Bicycle Cargo Trailer System
Materials:
Old Bike - Garage Sale $10
Old Cooler (any size) - Garage Sale $2
Nuts & bolts (if desired) - $2
Bar Stock (metal pieces) - $.50 a ft. (used 8ft. piece)
Angle Iron - $1 a ft. (used 8ft. piece)
Swivel Wheels - $1.50 a wheel
Scrap pieces of wood - no cost
Tools:
Drill, hacksaw, 15 and 10mm wrenches (depends on size of nuts/bolts one chooses), WD40
Process:
Drill holes ¾ of inch from end of both of bar stock pieces – 3/8 inch hole
Bend bar stock pieces on same end of holes 3 inches from the end
Connect bar stock pieces to rear studs of gears on bike
Use the nuts on bike (if one chooses to not buy new ones) to hold metal pieces in place.
Weld or have welded angle iron pieces in desired size of trailer probably the size of the cooler that will be placed on top of trailer. I made mine a little bigger in case I wanted to use a bigger cooler.
Drill holes for connecting bolts or weld swivel wheels at the bottom corners of the finished size of the angle iron/trailer.
Choose desired length of trailer from bike – slightly bend bar stock pieces at location where angle iron/trailer will start.
Mark the place where the hole will be drilled to connect bar stock pieces to trailer.
Hacksaw the excess metal that is not flush with the angle iron/trailer.
Drill hole at desired location through the metal piece and the angle iron/trailer, spray hole with WD40 to help bit go through.
Place bolts/nuts through the drilled holes to hold the metal piece to the angle iron/trailer – 1/4" bolt.
Place cooler on top of trailer if there is extra space put scrap pieces of wood to hold the cooler securely in place.
