Personal Statement

I began my professional career with a firm which provided technical support services to federal government agencies. At the outset, my efforts were driven by the desire to seek monetary gain. However, after three years of providing administrative and analytical support services to federal agencies, I was drawn to a career in public service for other reasons.

I found that the ability to affect public policy can be both exciting and challenging. Likewise, the ability to assist people through the provision of public services can be very rewarding. For example, as a public servant, I have had the opportunity to aid senior executive level staff members in the preparation of proposals for final rules. Additionally, I have prepared written responses to congressional inquiries, and in doing so had the opportunity to aid senior citizens in obtaining access to sorely needed medical services and prescription medicines.

The effect that these experiences have had on me is such that I cannot envision myself pursuing a career in any field other than public service.  Also, I should note that after nearly nine years of working in the public sector, it soon became evident that in order for me to advance professionally, I would need to expand my skill set.  It seemed logical to pursue an academic credential directly related to my career field.

Upon nearing the completion program, I feel a great deal of pride in my academic accomplishments.  Furthermore, the knowledge that I have gained from the program has enabled me to provide a wider range of services to to my current employer.  Specifically, I have developed a strong capacity to provide technical, analytical and administrative/managerial support.
