Professional work

My research and teaching is concerned with theories of race and white supremacy in the United States and South Africa, in particular comparative approaches to the study of scientific racism and racial hierarchy. I also am concerned with questions of race and gender in international relations. I am currently working on a book length manuscript on a massive international study conducted by the Carnegie Corporation from 1927-1932 era race and poverty in South Africa. This study resulted in a five volume publication that was a core textbook for two generations of South African social scientists, museum directors, and policy makers. In this manuscript, I investigate the role of the deployment of U.S. race relations experts during the height of Jim Crow. Thus, I consider the institutional and intellectual relations between scholars of race relations in both places and their influence on the production of apartheid law and segregation in both societies.
