NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT (NCLB)

The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is a primary focus in California’s education system. This act requires that all children are knowledgeable of the state standards by 2014. The act states that all students should be proficient in are English and Math.

Courses has been developed to help students pass the California High School Exit Examination (CHSEE). Many students their freshman year will be required to take remedial courses in Math and English.

NCLB act requires teachers to post California State Standards in the classroom. All students should be knowledgeable of all standards and how it is applied to lessons and assignments. The act also requires all teachers to be highly qualified. Each state sets their own standards of what a “highly qualified” teacher should be.

Schools are examined yearly, "Adequate Yearly Progress" (AYP) on how their students perform on tests. If schools are not performing well or if test scores are low, schools can lose Title 1 money and in severe cases the school could close.

FACT: A principal was fired at a elementary school in Stockton, California last year; failed to improve test scores.
