Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Sean
O’Shea. I am a graduate of San Francisco State
University’s Public Administration Master’s program,
with an emphasis on Urban Administration.
Currently, I am a Management Analyst with the City of
Fremont. At Fremont, I am fortunate in that I get
to work on a wide variety of projects, including
shepherding the city’s capital budget process, managing
grant funds on public works projects, writing contracts,
developing department budgets and editing department web
pages. I have a love for public service and am
very happy to have found a vocation in city government.
My government career began
working for the City Council in Oakland, California, as
the community outreach/constituent affairs assistant to
a city councilmember. I actually “left school
early for the pro’s” for this job, as it started as a
summer internship between my junior and senior years at
UCLA, which turned full-time when a job in the council
district office became available. After a year and
a half of working with constituents, developers,
business owners and council members, I returned to UCLA
to finish my undergraduate degree in political science.
For my last credits at UCLA, I interned at the National
League of Cities in Washington, D.C., eventually become
a full-time policy/legislative analyst. After a
year in D.C., I returned back home to the Bay Area to
start my Master’s Degree.
SFSU was a four year odyssey,
as I worked full-time during the course of most of the
program. I would like to thank all of my
instructors for their part in helping me earn this
degree, and for teaching my skills that I can apply
towards my career in Public Administration.
