Goal: This course is designed to help students acquaint themselves with contemporary Russian press and to learn about current developments in Russia by reading Russian press and doing research. The course also has a language component: students will be using authentic Russian media materials; also lecture and discussion will be carried primarily in Russian to promote a greater ease with the spoken language.

Methods: The course methodology will consist of lectures, small group work, text exercises, translation, viewing of Russian newscasts, research and oral presentations. Regular attendance and classroom participation are essential for students to pass this course.

Assessment: Students will be evaluated and graded on class participation, quizzes, oral presentations. There will be no final examination in this course. Instead, students will be asked to submit a research prospectus at mid-term, and a completed research paper on the last day of class. Class participation--30%; written homework--15%; oral presentations--25%; research paper--30%.

Language Lab: Students are required to listen to tapes included with the text, and to view video tapes of Russian news broadcasts. Audio tapes can be checked-out for home use.

Survival tips: make friends with the Russian Program Web site which offers extensive resources for both literature and area studies majors. Note especially the media section in our database segment. Visit the periodical room at the library both in person and via the Ivestigator (our on-line catalog). Do not put off homework or research to the last minute. Since much of the work will be done in small groups or with a partner, it is essential that you exchange phone numbers and e-mail addresses with other students in the class. Free e-mail accounts are available in 110 ADM.
