Steve Dodson's WebLog : AntiSpyware (beta) Build 613 Released Today

Microsoft released AntiSpyware (beta) Build 613 today. Updates include:

  1. Software expiration will be extended to December 31, 2005.

  2. Alerts Moving Quickly Across the Screen : Messages which move quickly off the screen when the start bar is not docked horizontally are also fixed. Users who dock their start bar on the sides of their screen will now be able to read messages generated from Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (beta).

  3. Support for Long Descriptions: Users of older builds only have access to the short descriptions which ship as part of the signatures. These short descriptions only provide limited information about potentially unwanted software. Long descriptions in build 613 will help users by giving them more information about the potentially unwanted software detected on their PCs.

  4. Improved Winsock LSP removal mechanism: In some cases, removing spyware LSPs, or can disrupt network functionality. Through enhancements made in this beta refresh, we’ve lessened the chance that this problem will occur.

Dell Laser 1100 to start price war?

Dell's new Laser Printer 1100, price at $99, and toner cartridge rated for 2,000 pages, priced at $65, is relatively low and aimed squarely at Lexmark and HP. I haven't been impressed with HP's low-end lasers so it will be interesting to see how Dell's stacks up.

THG: Intel demonstrates AMT for notebooks

According to Tom's Hardware, Intel demonstrates AMT for notebooks for the first time in public.
Eden and a colleague demonstrated AMT using two networked laptops - one representing the end users' computer and the other on an IT management console. The end user computer had been put out of commission by a virus that attacked its operating system. The machine was essentially frozen from an operating system point of view and OS supported networking was not functioning.

AMT connected to the wounded laptop using AMT and allowed control of the laptop using an out of band console, fixed the virus problem and rebooted the laptop back to full operability. Eden then noted that AMT went a step further. Once it is clear how a problem can be prevented or fixed, IT staff can automatically send out the necessary code to other vulnerable computers and then force the computers to run the code.

Active Management Technology is scheduled to be introduced across later this year in processors such as the Xeon- and Pentium 4 600-series.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Trying to clean an infected machine while it's running the malware you're trying to get rid of is not a smart move. So it looks like Spybot S&D 1.4 will be quite helpful according to its new features:

First native multi-installation scanner
On PE boot CDs as well as on any system with multiple installations of Windows 2000 or later, Spybot-S&D 1.4 is able to scan the other installations as well, including the registry. From what we know, Spybot-S&D is the first anti-spyware solution that offers inactive registry scanning as a native feature.

Speed boost-ups
Spybot-S&D 1.4 should work noticably faster than 1.3 during scans. And if you still don't like to wait, you can play our easter egg while scanning.

Improved tools
We've improved the Tools section that Spybot-S&D offers in advanced mode - the process list now offers a list of open network connection per application (Windows 2000 or newer only), helping you to quickly identify which applications are local and which do use connections to the outside. Our detection mechanisms have also been updated, from detecting and cleaning services over protocol filters to the afore-mentioned scanning in inactive installations registries.

Graphics remake, and more
We've replaced the old home made icons with a bunch of great graphics provided by the guys at Yellow Icon Studio to make the user interface look smoother. But while this is highly visible on the surface, there have been more than 104 important changes underneath.
