FirefoxADM

From mozilla wiki I learned of FirefoxADM, an administrative template for Windows Group Policy. It's a SourceForge.net project and there's a blog that discusses it. There's also a similar project named WetDog. Firefox MSI files can be obtained from FrontMotion.

Among other security and bug fixes, MediaWiki version 1.4.2 resolves a problem with running MediaWiki on IIS when using PHP in ISAPI mode.

McAfee to test virus scaning during boot

McAfee PreScan will load up and scan your Windows computer before malware has a chance to get its hooks in to your OS. A beta may be coming as soon as May and will integrate with ePO and ProtectionPilot. It's not clear if this will handle spyware which would be even better since current solutions such as Microsoft's AntiSpyware suffer from trying to remove malware that is already running.

Windows Server 2003 Access-based Enumeration

Windows Server 2003 Access-based Enumeration makes visible only those files or folders that the user has the rights to access. When Access-based Enumeration is enabled, Windows will not display files or folders that the user does not have the rights to access. This download provides a GUI and a CLI that enables this feature.

The download is available from Microsoft.com.

McAfee product updates: Virex 7.6

Just released is McAfee Virex 7.6 for Mac OS X. This new version can be managed with ePolicyOrchestrator but unfortunately not ProtectionPilot.

Also, released last week, Installation Designer v8.1 fixes a number of issues.

McAfee® Anti-Phishing Filter - Technology Preview

McAfee has a GUI-less plugin for Windows that is aimed at protecting against phishing. It filters addresses in IE and Explorer and appears to block communication with the suspect site. For some reason they stuck this on their Free Tools page.

Beta test Virtual Server 2005 SP1

Is your server's CPU utilization too low? Then give Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 SP1 a try. Try it with Linux and report any bugs. Paul Thurrott has a good article about VS2005SP1.

Wiki anyone?

The number of Wiki projects is quite daunting to look at when trying to decide on one to implement. TWiki looks impressive and is quite popular in business environments but it looks a bit messy to set up. In addition, I'm just not a very big fan of perl based websites. MediaWiki is also quite popular but for some reason, which I can't pinpoint, it doesn't feel right. DokuWiki, PmWiki, CoWiki all seem to have nice features but it's unclear how well they'll be supported. For now I continue to contrast and compare.

Why Blogger?

Same reason why I use IIS, Apache, PHP, MySQL, SQLite, Windows, etc.: it works best for me in the context of what I know and can do. My SFSU web account doesn't do PHP so I can't just go throw up WordPress. In addition, I prefer to keep up, as best I can, with many things tech: blogging, web development, HTPC, systems management, and much more.
