Botanist, born in Frankfurt, Germany. Successively professor of botany at Freiburg and Halle, he then moved to Strasbourg, where he was also the first rector of the reorganized university. He studied the morphology and physiology of the fungi and the Myxomycetae, and is recognized as the founder of modern mycology.
