Whorf, Benjamin Lee (1897-1941)


 

Linguist, born in Winthrop, MA. A chemical engineer and fire prevention officer by profession, he studied linguistics and American Indian languages in his spare time. Influenced by the teaching of Edward Sapir at Yale University (1931-32), he developed Sapir's insights into the influence of language on people's perception of the world into what became known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis .
