Gould, Stephen Jay (1941- )
Gould, Stephen Jay (1941- )
Paleontologist, born in New York City. He studied at Antioch College and Columbia University, and became professor of geology at Harvard in 1973. His forceful support for modern views on evolution has been expressed in many articles and books, including Hen's Teeth and Horse's Toes (1983).
Not just a popular writer, Gould has also advanced the theory of punctated equilirbrium that evolution moves in fits and starts rather than the gradualism espoused by Darwin.
