Geertz, Clifford (James) (1923- )


Cultural anthropologist, born in San Francisco, CA. He studied at Antioch College and Harvard, taught at the universities of California (1958-60) and Chicago (1960-70), then became professor of social science at Princeton's Institute of Advanced Study in 1970. His fieldwork led to such publications as The Religion of Java (1960) and Islaam Observed (1968). An eloquent theoretician, his essays, collected in The Interpretation of Cultures (1973) and Local Knowledge (1983), were particularly influential.
