British Zoologist. He studied at Oxford, and taught at the University of California, Berkeley before returning to Oxford to lecture in zoology in 1970. His work on animal behavior and genes emphasizes that apparently selfish behavior is designed to ensure survival of the gene, apparently above that of the carrier (The Selfish Gene, 1976), and this and wider views on behavior and evolution have been developed in The Blind Watchmaker (1986).
