Founded in 1898, this church is the oldest Jodo Shinshu (Pure Land) Buddhist Church belonging to the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA).

Buddhism is founded on the teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha. His teachings originated in India and came to the United States through Asia. This church belongs to the Jodo Shinshu Sect and is one of the major religions of Japan.

Jodo Shinshu Buddhism teaches us to live a life of gratitude, knowing that The Buddha’s Boundness Compassion surrounds us that it is inherent in all living beings.

Inside the hondo (main hall), you will find a statue of Amida Buddha (Buddah of Infinite Wisdom and Compassion) in the center of the altar. To the right of the statue, you will see a scroll with a picture of Shinran Shonin (1173-1263). Shinran Shonin is the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.

A statue of Shinran Shonin can be seen in the foyer of this church. A pamphlet on the meaning of the altar pieces is available.

On the roof of this church is a stupa that houses the Holy Relics of The Buddha. The Relics were a gift to the BCA by the Emperor of Siam (Thailand) in 1935.

The church welcomes all vistors and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
