Water Purifier Plans
|
The water purifier I made uses the filtration method. This purifier was made to reduce odor and color, and to improve taste. It absorbs unwanted chemicals such as chlorine, which is used to sterilize water. However, the down side of this filter is that it can filter only a small amount of water. It is designed so that water can go through it only at a certain flow rate. Thus, it will need a couple of days to purify water. Moreover, the filter needs to be changed regularly. It requires to be replaced by a new filter at least every couple of months. This water purifier is made out of five layers( from the top, bamboo leaves, small stones, wood chips, non-chemical charcoal and screen). Leaves do not have to be bamboo. They can be replaced by palm leaves. First, you need a container to put all the materials. It can be made out of plastic, ceramic or wood. Leaves are layered on the top, then small stones and wood chips need to go next. You can get them from a nursery store. Instead of using wood chips, you can also use sand, which is also from a nursery store. The most important item in the filter is non -chemical charcoal. This needs to go to the second from the bottom. These non chemical charcoals cannot be found from Safeway or Home Depot Stores. You can only get them from a pharmacy. You need to order them. The price is thirty to thirty-five dollars for a half pound. You can also make them. I made the charcoals for this project. It took me two days to make them. First, you need to burn wood. You wait until coals get whitish -red. The charcoal can be made from any type of trees. I personally used almond wood. Then suffocate them for 24 hours. When you cool them, you want to put them in a fire-proof container. This non-chemical charcoal consist of 100% carbon. As I have already mentioned earlier, this filter (technically,½ the non-chemical charcoal which is carbon) removes chemicals when the contaminant molecules link to them chemically, called absorption (Bazilay, Weinberg, Eley, 1999). Finally, you need to place a screen which you can get from a hardware store. The total amount of time to build this was approximately ten to fifteen minutes. The cost varies depending on how you want to obtain the charcoals. If you decide to make them, the total cost would be five to six dollars. |
