elaeis guineensis
A slow-growing thorny palm from Western tropical Africa,
it requires a warm, humid climate with well-drained soil. The fruit, when
roasted, tastes like lamb and is often used for palm kernel oil; the sap
makes a good wine and toddy and the young leaves are eaten as a vegetable.
