couroupita guianensis
A large deciduous tree, popular in South America and
West Indies, it is a curiosity in the warmer areas of Florida and is propagated
by seed. The fruits are 6-8" across, round, hard and brown, hence the
common name. The white pulp is ill-smelling when ripe and contains many
seeds but has a grape or wine-like flavor, slightly acid, which is edible.
