Simpson — Plant Systematics. Elsevier Press

• An up to date treatment of the subject. Lots of beginning materials. I use it in my semester-long course.

Judd, et al. — Plant Systematics. A Phylogenetic Approach. Sinauer Press

• Another good, recent coverage of the plant families of the world. Has excellent treatise on phylogenetic inference.

Castner — Photographic Atlas of Botany and Guide to Plant Identification. Feline Press

• Excellent, beautifully photographed reference. Inexpensive, too.

Borror — Dictionary of Word Roots and Combining Forms. Mayfield Publishing Co.

• Nice concise dictionary of what the words mean. There are other books out there, including the larger and more complete "Composition of Scientific Words", by Brown (Smithsonian).

Kozloff and Beidleman — Plants of the San Francisco Bay Region. Sagen Press

• This is an excellent flora of the greater Bay Area. A useful local alternative to The Jepson Manual.
