Examples of Interesting Web Art Sites
- visit site I thought that the Siggraph98 and 1998 Arts Electronica were
the two best showings. Siggragh98 had the most interesting
interactive and 3-D sites to play with. And the 98 Arts
Electronica offer the best ideas mixing art and commercial
appeal together. In the Siggraph 98 , I liked WHEN WORLDS
COLLIDE and CATHEDRAL...Steve Nobili
- visit site In regards to the "best of the Web" , I didn't really find
anything outside of traditional art that I liked. Some
organizations like Billy Graham & Friends seemed to have
made good use of the Web. And have created an elaborate site
, but it's not liked I considered it art. In San Francisco
, there was a pretty good Web-site for Ghiradelli Square ,
yet it didn't pass for art in my book (all were viewed from
Yahoo's 10 best of the Web selections)...Steve Nobili
- visit site Impressive demonstration of web art dealing with issues of
voyeurism & cyberculture. Uses images from "web cams" to create
a piece at your command. Link structure is clear; there is
even an option for choosing particular cameras. Go see this!

- visit site British ideas of what makes a website artful & skillfully done
are different from those of here. There seems to be a lot more
emphasis on arranging links on a page. The colors are bright
but not high-contrasting, which is good. Very text-heavy also.
Pretty good - JLS
- visit site I had a hard time choosing a favorite multi-media art site from these "Best Of" links.
The thing that bothered me the most was the preparation a viewer had to go through in order to understand enough to interact with the site. What does one have to be...?....a fellow computer geek who likes reading wordy manual of instruction?
I liked the viewer participation of exploring the 3D images in "As Worlds Collide", BUT what a drag all that explanatory text is. The majority of the sites that I looked at had too much text for my liking.
SO, the site that I'm going to have to say that I liked the most is Juliet Martin's "Please Stay On The Line".
This site was more intuitive in my opinion, and it was technically clever and fun for the viewer to interact with.
The design of the site was relatively clear and straightforward. I think viewing the familiar images and sound qualities of the telephone in a new humorous angle was the clearest conceptual art presentation that I came across.

- visit site this site blew me away. I enjoyed looking at the vr worlds as the progessed.
I also liked the interactivity of the viewer and how, when allowed, another person
can manipulate the vr world.
- visit site The "codebox" was fun to navigate around, although you can get lost easily. It is very photo intensive, but has many nice effects, such as roll-overs. Concentrates on the immigration of a european woman using old letters. Reminds me a lot of a stylistic journal. TomL
- visit site I found this site using the Yahoo best of the web site. It's a cool way to read your daily comics, and it archives strips from a week back. I don't know if the site itself is "Art", but is a fun site to visit. TomL
- visit site I felt this site wa s the most entertaining. I liked the user interaction and the variety of worlds to experience.- LJ
- visit site 1st place for Ars Electronica '97 goes to "Form." Its absurd, insane, and messes with my mind; uses the form to drive the user into a meaningless pile of endless choices -TL
- visit site 2nd place for Ars Electronica '97 goes to Deutchland. clear interface design, the metaphor gives a tutorial while providing a history as well. -TL
- visit site 1st place for Siggraph '98, because they used my favorite font-MarkerThin, good poetry, unique computer environment created by auto-scrolling text with changing images. Full of insight. -TL
- visit site 2nd place for Siggragh '98, random option for decision making; the participation of the audience is the main focus of content; and the idea is deep.-TL
- visit site 1st place for Ars Electronica '98 goes to "Radio Internationale Stadt," because the interface in elegantly small; includes costum searches; has a wide array of choices; and makes lots of cool noises.-TL
- visit site 2nd place goes to E-lab:"Xchange," because enabling viewers to listen to live radio in other areas of the world is a ingenuative way to use the web. -TL
- visit site Nice design for the Academy of World Wide Web Arts & Sciences. Images change on screen when menu options are highlighted. The site creates a window in the middle of the main page. Overall it seems like they were going for a sophisicated look...Steve Nobili
- visit site This site is more like a gallery of computer art. Some of it looks pretty good and some of it looks boring. And some of the artists featured here have appeared in Siggraph before...Steve Nobili
- visit site Special Mention 1998 Arts Electronica
This site has more information than is easily taken in quickly, however the diversity is intriquing and the topics are of special interest to me. From natural history to virtual gardens this site has from the oldest lifeform to growth of virtual plants on the web.
- visit site This text based site captivated me from the start impact through words is a visual based environment is quite amazing the navigation is also used effectively, encouraging the reader to wind his way through the site
- visit site A hypermedia narrative story using diary pages as interface.
Nice layout as if it was a diary on paper. The paper gave
it an appealing look. It was like really going through his
diary. If you wanted to unfold something laying on the page
you just had to click on it. Very cool images.
- visit site Please stay on the phone. Interactive page using the phone
as a metaphor. Simple set up- interface very easy to use.
Enjoyable graphics and animations. Need plug-ins though.
Content was cool. Nice roll over text on 1st page.
- visit site My #1 pick for web art is Annette Weintraub's Pedestrian: Walking as Meditation and the Lure of everyday objects.
I like how she moves you trought the sight. I also liked the differant pictures she used. This was by far my fav out of the ones I was able to get working.
- visit site The one I liked 2nd best out of the pages I was able to view was Lekso's Codebox.
The rollovers were fun to play with. I like the way the sight was designed. RG
- visit site i found this site through siggraph '98. i am the exterior
force controlling the emotions of another being. i fill
in the blanks and follow instructions (am i controlling or
being controlled?). i am dumped out into YAHOO! when i fill in
the blanks, i am like her, i am alone, nobody answers.

- visit site This site is unique because it made me feel like I was reading someone's diary. The handwriting, photos and torn edges of the pages added up to make every page very personal

- visit site typography experiments. art? i play with letters. i type.
what's going on? a puzzle of sorts, although i'm not sure
this puzzle has a definate answer. it's one of yahoo's cool links..."cool"
-ven
- visit site This site is different from the others because it opens a samll window for the audio. This is not only an option for the viewers, but, along with the content (photos) given, it is very tempting to check it out!
R Viquez, both reviews from Siggraph 98
- visit site Tickertape display of search topics in real time. Elegant, fascinating. -sw
- visit site I found this site strong, and interesting. I don't think it was meant as web art neccesscarily, but more out of anger. I like the way they use a moving collage, it makes it more dynamic an impactful.-TL
- visit site This is one of the few web sites that actually had some appeal to me
It had some key attributes such as the fun and colorful interface
and the graphics which draw the user in because one can kind of
visualize the techno-creature roaming around this realm and
therefore makes you want to continue so you can see the thing
do its stuff. The concept itself is kind of obvious, creatures
in cyberspace, Hmmm I've never heard that one before. William
Gibson does a much better job of putting living entities in
digital space. Along with the tamoguchi site this one is my favorite
simply because it's fun. An honorable mention would have to go to the beast site
but it fails beacause of the exessive abstraction and the annoying javaisms.
- visit site I mostly like this site because of their elegant use of animation and design. This page is somewhat of a web-zine concept, using digital artists to collaborate their ideas. Many of the pages are rather ambiguous, but I really like the simplicity and abstractness of it. Some topics include a page of web-cams, and a group project with 13 people learning to put up their web-pages. The creative ideas and easy interface made me want it on my list of good web pages.

- visit site I'm not sure if this site works as art, but the interface is really
good, as is the structure of information. the drawers thing is
cool as is the fact that the menu is always available. The
piece would work better as an electronic encyclopedia type
setup. It provides alot of cultural information but doesn't do
any sort of abstraction.
- visit site you can view soils of the world...pick from textures,
location, type, color, elevation, and more! they are
all in the same kind of bottle.
- visit site at a specific moment of time, people from different regions
of the world took quicktime vr movies of their chosen location.
some of their living room, some of their city, some of a more
unique space. you can view these qt-vr movies on this website.
- visit site This is a pretty good example of art as propaganda. This is
definitely not intended as an art site, but the combinatoin of
nefarious reputation and the children's book format gives the
work a surreal kind of juxtaposition. One of the pages uses
Harry the reconnicance pigeon to represent spying. I looked,
but I couldn't find the page or the cartoon figure for
assasinations of political figures adverse to world domination by
by oil companies. Barney the political adjustments consultant, perhaps? Another art site
could go with this premise and come up with some other friendly
doublespeak creatures.
socialists leaders of third world countries.
- visit site I like the passiveness of this site from SIGGRAPH 98. It is a long narrative that captures my attention because I do not have to scroll or click on anything. I think it is a usefull format for getting peoples attention and keeping it till it's played out.- C.B.
- visit site I like the interactivity on this page from Siggraph 98. Navigating in the 3d worlds gives you an idea of what navigating on the web might be in the future.- C.B.
- visit site This is a flash sight so it might take awhile to download.
I'm home sick but thought you could discuss it anyways.
I enjoyed this sight because of it's use of
a storytelling aspect that I haven't really seen on the web.
It isn't just another information based sight.
Flash is just the coolest in my opinion.
- visit site If you enjoy poetry check this site out. It has nice design, plenty of information and keeps you reading. -LJ
- visit site I thought this a good example of a non-art web site. Although it is somewhat art related. I like the simple easily navigatable interface, and you can learn all about Native American geometry. RG
- visit site Honorary mention - Ars Electronica '97. The Multi-Cultural Recycler. This is an interesting, yet fairly simple
concept unique to the medium of the WWW. Contains elements i believe to be relevent in art: appropriation, chance/randomness,
clear implementation, etc. The results i got from experimentation were excellent. - A.C.

- visit site Once past all of the hippie banter... there are some interesting links and information
which otherwise may be difficult to track down. Lots of hidden / hard to find info.
