The video spin/unspin is a documentation of a drawing performance in which I hold a piece of chalk between my toes and spin clockwise as I draw an increasingly larger circle on the floor of my studio. As I pivot on my left foot, I gradually extend my right foot away from the center, continually increasing the circumference until I lose my balance. I switch feet and unspin (counterclockwise) to erase the drawing.
For the 2007 Stillwell Student Show (at the Fine Arts Gallery of San Francisco State University), I spun on a 6’ diameter wooden drawing platform that was centered in a 12’x 12’ room, curtained off and hidden from view. A video camera mounted on the ceiling transmitted a live signal to a TV monitor directly outside of the space, on which viewers were able to watch the performance.
Chalking the platform completed the creation of the projection surface for the video spin/unspin. Overhead, a ceiling-mounted mirror reflected the light from a projector onto the platform below. Viewers entered the space.
