Personal Statement

Growing up in
Sacramento
with a family of public servants, I always kind of envisioned
myself also joining the ranks of public service. After
graduating high school, I set off to Siena, Italy
on a scholarship to study Italian at the Universitá di Siena per
Stranieri. It was an amazing experience during which I got
to travel throughout Italy, study, meet new people and
gain more independence and a better idea of who I was.
When I returned, I immediately set off for San Francisco where I started my college career at San Francisco State University.
Before even starting as a Freshman, I had declared my major to
be International Relations. At the time, I envisioned
myself joining the State Department. I got the opportunity
to “get my feet wet” when in June of 2005 I was offered an
internship with the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of European
and Eurasian Affairs. My post was the American Embassy in Rome,
Italy
and I worked in the political section. It was an amazing
experience and one I will not soon forget.
In January of 2005, I began my career with the U.S. General
Services Administration as a student co-op. Upon the
completion of my BA in International Relations in January of
2006, I entered the GSA PBS Intern Program as a Realty
Specialist. What followed were two years of intense work
and study. I carried a full project load in addition to
completing my intern requirements which included classes,
rotational assignments, quarterly panels with upper management,
quarterly written reports and an in-depth case study. The
internship culminated with presentations of my case study to the
Board of Directors, Leadership Council and Real Estate Division
Upper Management.
In the Fall of 2006 I decided to return to
San Francisco
State to complete a
Master’s Degree in Public Administration. I wanted to get
my MPA because I felt that it would be the most applicable to
the career I have chosen for myself and that it would help me to
become a better employee. Over the course of the program I
have learned about policy formulation and implementation, human
resources, organizational behavior, budgets, economics, and
public management, to name a few. With completion of the
degree, I am looking very much forward to life with out school!
