Personal Statement

I have always had an interest and passion to serve underserved populations. As an undergraduate student at San Jose State University (SJSU), I was involved in different types of public service activities. For example, I worked in an orphanage in Tijuana with Campus Ministry, volunteered at Asian Community Immigration Clinic, and served at Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network through AmeriCorps. In 2005, the Santa Clara County Office of Human Relations awarded me the Volunteer of the Year award. Understandably, these experiences made a lasting impression on me and helped focus and expand my interest in public administration.

After graduating from SJSU, I realized that I needed to pursue graduate studies to have a stronger impact in underrepresented communities. Therefore, I decided to get a Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) at San Francisco State University with an emphasis in policy making and analysis. As a bilingual professional, I know I will contribute immensely to this field because there is a great need for such individuals in the public and nonprofit sector. The MPA program has provided me with the practical skills and tools necessary to challenge the current injustices that affect communities with limited resources. With an MPA degree, I see myself working for an organization in the public or nonprofit sector that will utilize my experience and skills so that I can continue serving members of the public.
