Since 1995, I have advised 257 undergraduate students, of which, 112 have graduated (43.6%, list of students available upon request). Over the same period, the graduation rate for the Kinesiology Department is ~ 45% (819/1792). Where as, the information on the University graduation rate is listed at 38.5% (http://www.sfsu.edu/~ubp/clickmap/tracking/studright.htm). Good advising is one of the reasons our graduation rate is higher than the overall campus. The Kinesiology Department takes undergraduate advising very seriously, as I do. I think this is seen by the numbers listed above. I have received letters from the Undergraduate advising Center thanking me for role as an advisor, and I enjoy working with the students in helping them plan their careers. Most of my advising is mixed together with my teaching and professional development of my graduate students. This involves helping them design a thesis/ project, prepare their proposals, fill-out the human subjects forms, collect and review pilot data, analyze the data, preparing the final thesis and manuscript, present their results at the CSU student research, RIMI competitions, and at regional and national conferences. These things all demand a great amount of time. As you can see from the list on the following page, I have helped 26 of our graduate students complete their Master’s degrees, with 8 more in the process of data collection. Most of our students have stayed in the field, 1 MD, 4 Ph.D.’s, 1 PT, 1 Nurse, and most of the others, personal trainers. I’m very proud of my graduate students and the role that I have played in their education.
