Knowledge of Public Administration

The MPA program has been instrumental for me in developing a well-rounded knowledge of public administration. The knowledge I have gained from the program includes: a thorough understanding of the workings of government, the policy-making process and politics, an appreciation for the role which non-profits play in our society and management challenges which they face, a familiarity with all elements involved in public and non-profit sector management including budgeting, managing, human resources, decision-making, ethics, working with a team, etc., and through my policy concentration, a full-spectrum of tools to help in policy analysis and program evaluation.

To exemplify the knowledge which I have gained, I am presenting below my culminating-experience project, a strategic assessment memo based on a case regarding a public-private partnership developed between the Clinton administration and the Big Three auto manufacturers in the early 1990’s called the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles. Incorporating public administration theory gained from almost all of my courses, the memo highlights my critical abilities to consider a real-world case and make realistic recommendations for the continuation and improvements of a program. I am also including a policy briefing, which was the result of extensive research into the legal and implementation-related underpinnings of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) immigrant detention policy.
