Personal Statement

The San Francisco State Public Administration program has proven elemental in my career change from private sector accounting to public sector policy analysis and program evaluation. Beginning in January, 2009, I will be working as an analyst with the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in San Francisco. This position will be the culmination of a path which started as an English major at the University of Pennsylvania and will rest for now with me pursuing my passion: participating in federal policy-making.

Analytical work such as that required by the General Ledger Account and Tax Analyst positions which I held in the private sector always appealed to me. However, the goals of these positions left me unfulfilled. I have always wanted to help the world through my career. When I discovered public policy- a field which uses analytical tools to help determine the best and most efficient policies for public organizations to implement to bring about a desired change- I knew this was the field for me.

I chose the San Francisco State Public Administration program to increase my knowledge of government and the policy-making process at a public institution, and to enhance my analytical skill-set. Along the way I have also had the opportunity to work closely with professors on research and complete projects for local community organizations.  I have been very happy with the knowledge I have gained and believe I am well prepared for a career in the public sector.
