                  FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
The vast majority of the active Cell and Molecular Biology research labs are supported by external funding.  Due to our unique status as a primarily undergraduate institution and as a minority serving institution, we have access to some lucrative funding opportunities.  The kinds of grants that are typically funded in the department include:

NIH-MBRS - (Minority Biomedical Research Support)  - This grant is intended to support all
Biomedical research at minority serving institutions.  It is a 4 year award that
provides sufficient funds to hire a technician and run a very active laboratory (~$150K
                    in direct costs/year).

NIH-AREA   - This grant is a 2 year award made to investigators at primarily undergraduate
                    institutions (~$50K/year).

NSF-RUI      - This is a 3 year award made to investigators at primarily undergraduate institutions.

NSF-CAREER  - The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide
activity that offers the National Science Foundation´s most prestigious awards for new
faculty members.  The CAREER program recognizes and supports the early
career-development activities of those teacher-scholars who are most likely to become
the academic leaders of the 21st century.

We have an Office of Sponsored Research that helps faculty with grant submission as well as with managing funds once they have been awarded.

There are also a number of internal mini-grants that can provide funds for supplies or release from teaching.
