English Lesson 5

The Media and Social Justice Around the World
Date:
Week 4, Day 4
Period/Class Title: English
Name: Karin Van Orman
# of students: 30

OBJECTIVE:

Investigate how a particular medium changes as it is translated to other cultures through group research.

MATERIALS:

30 printouts detailing the assignment, computer lab with 30 computers, papers, pens, printing capabilities, CD player, various wold hip hop CDs.

NOTES:

Students will maintain the same groups throughout the unit. Students should sit with their usual group as much as possible in the computer lab. Be sure students leave the lab just as they found it.

STEPS:

Anticipatory Set: Do Now: (While teacher checks roll and students get settled)Pick up an assignment sheet. Go to a computer and open up the Hip Hop Circuit Website at http://online.sfsu.edu/~jcooks/hiphopcircuit/frontup.html. Begin to familiarize yourself with what resources are available to you on this website. (5 minutes)

1. Review assignment and clarify any questions. Assign a country to each group: research hip hop in Japan, the Philippines, Columbia, South Africa and Russia. Use the Hip Hop Circuit to begin your search. Spend the period researching what hip hop means in these different contexts. What has been preserved from U.S. hip hop? What has changed? How has American culture impacted the music of this country? Has the music given rise to new ideas, and are the effects positive or negative? Be prepared to give a mini presentation in class tomorrow. Using CD’s provided by teacher, find a song from your country that you would like to play for the class during the presentation. Divide the tasks among group members so you each know your role for tomorrow. (50 minutes)

2. Teacher will make certain that computers are being used for research only, not for email or surfing the web, etc. Teacher will be a resource as questions arise. (50 minutes)

3. Clean up (5 minutes)

FOLLOW UP ACTIVITY:

As a group students will present their findings in class the next day. The class will give feedback to each group after their presentations. These presentations will allow the teacher to assess the comprehension of the students and the success of the lesson.

LITERACY ASPECT:

Students will activate literacy skills in internet medium, and will use reading, critical thinking and writing skills as they work with their groups to collect and organize information. The follow up activity will allow them to augment oral presentation skills.

REFLECTIONS/RESPONSE:

A teacher should be aware of her students’ computer literacies before attempting this exercise. If her students are unfamiliar with internet research, this lesson would have to be preceded by a lesson on how to use the internet as a tool. It may be challenging to keep the noise level down in the lab during this time. It would be helpful to have a volunteer assist the class for this exercise.
