PBL

Resources

Fairly straight-forward. The curriculum builder provides pop-up directional cues throughout the process, however there are many areas that are easy to miss, and the process is quite lengthy. While this site provides suggestions for PBL-directed lesson building, the PBL online builder does not necessary create a project-based lesson. Adding activities to a plan built upon an essential question does not guarantee PBL. The strength of this site is its wealth of resources. Technology resources, PBL resources, a multimedia library and on-demand examples and help features more than recoup the annual fee.

A set-up tutorial exists, as well as links to help features within each page. There is a learning curve to begin use, but once familiar with the tools, this site is quite easy to build within. While not designed solely for PBL use, the nature of this online environment provides students with multiple tools for interactivity, collaboration, and project building. The teacher would need to establish the project-based context before setting students loose to create. The unique online learning experience this system provides, as well as the protected community and administrative tools allow for both teachers and students to build 21st Century Skills.

The drop-down features of the PBL checklists are a bit clunky, but with a little trial and error the user has access to useful lists to build to, as well as evaluate to. The PBL section of the 4Teachers site is specific to PBL. In addition to the checklists, this site provides background and examples of PBL as well as links to many free useful tools for teachers.

WebQuest.org

WebQuests are a style of online PBL projects. There is no one set format, nor builder tools specific to creating them. A teacher will have to learn how to create a webpage on their own (or with the help of free or cheap templates), then figure out how to have it posted online. WebQuests were designed to be project-based in nature. The idea is to create a project that students can then explore through a series of online links and resources. It should be noted, however, that a poorly designed WebQuest could involve no real PBL. This site keeps up to date links of innovative projects, conferences, and resources.
