RESEARCH
AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Dr. Kim's major research emphasis centers on the examination of sport and
exercise psychology theories and interactions from a cross-cultural perspective.
Dr. Kim’s recent research interests revolve around how an individual’s the
motivational orientations and perceptions of motivational atmosphere are related
to the experience of stress and coping strategies employed to deal with the
stress encountered in sport and exercise domains across cultures. Integrating
motivational theories and coping related theories, she is currently studying how
such frameworks explain stress, cognitive appraisals, and coping processes among
athletes from different cultural dimensions (i.e., individualism and
collectivism). Dr. Kim is also
involved in research on motivation and health-related cognitions and behaviors
of sport participants with a colleague who is a sport psychologist of the US
Olympic Gymnast Team. She is currently working on concerns the relationship of
the perceived motivational climate to psychological precursors of eating
disorders among young elite female gymnasts, which will be published soon.
Since Dr. Kim started her professional career at San Francisco State
University, she has been continuing cross cultural research between Korea and US to
investigate causes of stress perceived by sport participants and motivational
goals in a collectivistic
culture (i.e., Korea in this study) and how those are different from causes of
stress perceived in a individualistic culture (i.e., US).
Recently, she is expending her interest in motivational aspects in
competitive sport to recreational physical activity and physical education
settings.
