Personal Statement

Since I graduated from college, I
have had a desire to pursue a career in public service.
I gained my initial professional experience in
finance and accounting at National Semiconductor
Corporation. While working there for
over four years, I volunteered at a local high school
mentoring at-risk students. This
experience solidified my eventual career shift to the
public sector as a Financial Analyst for the San Mateo
County Office of Education.
While working on various financial
policy issues with the agency, I realized the need for a
professional, business-type focus for government
programs. I also gained first-hand
experience of how the lack of financial resources can
affect the success of implementing school programs while
volunteering at an after school literacy program at
Flynn Elementary School in San Francisco’s Mission
District.
Recently, I have re-focused my
career as a Performance Analyst with the City Services
Auditor Division of the San Francisco Controller’s
Office. This dynamic organization is
providing me with the opportunity of helping city
departments develop and evaluate various programs in
hopes of providing effective services to San Francisco
residents.
Throughout my career thus far, the
skills, knowledge, and real-world experiences I have
learned in the public administration program at SF State
have been invaluable. I have learned
technical and analytical skills that improve my
performance, presentation skills to effectively
communicate to a variety of audiences, and the
confidence it takes to succeed in a challenging public
sector work environment.
I would like to thank my friends
and family who have supported me unconditionally
throughout my life, especially during the past 2 and a
half years as I worked full-time and went to school
part-time at night. A special thanks
to my parents, Judy & Gary, and my brother, Craig, who
have molded me into the man I am today.
And to my beautiful wife, Kristin – I am the
luckiest man to have such a wonderful, smart, caring
woman stand beside. Thank you for
inspiring me!
