Personal Statement

Millions of people visit the great monuments of our nation’s capital each year. They admire the beauty and prestige of memorials, such as the Washington Monument, Lincoln’s Memorial, and the White House. Yet, the power of this nation resides not in these monuments, but in its citizens. It was this belief that led me to apply to San Francisco State University’s Master of Public Administration program. The goal of this program is to “prepare people for responsible positions in the public sector.” President Kennedy once said, “ask not what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country.” My desire to become a public servant stems from my personal philosophy that our country needs citizens who understand that our well-being is tied to the well-being of our neighbors, community, and country.

As a graduate student of the Master’s in Public Administration program at San Francisco State University, I have become well grounded in the knowledge and skills needed for public management and have had the privilege of learning from a diverse and inspirational group of peers and professors. In my course of study I have developed strong research, writing, leadership, public speaking, and critical thinking skills. Most importantly, I have mastered the professional skills needed to be successful in public service– budgeting and policy analysis, human resource management, and negotiation and collaboration skills. Upon completion of the MPA program, my primary career objective is to obtain an administrative position in a governmental agency that promotes social welfare and helps the community.

This e-portfolio demonstrates the knowledge and skills that I have acquired in SFSU’s MPA program that will enable me to succeed in a public service career. I have enclosed my resume with additional information about work experience, educational background, and awards and honors; Resume.
