iClicker 2 Questions

How do I register my iClicker 2 into the class?

Click on this link for the iLearn iClicker registration. Follow the instructions for registering your clicker. Check with Ivy if you have any problems.

I have an iClicker 1 from a previous semester. Can I use it for the class?

Yes, use the same registration procedure as the iClicker 2 above. The Clickers must be registered again at the beginning of every semester.

I have another brand of clickers: Turning Point or eInstruction CPS. Can I use it for the class?

No, unfortunately, the different clicker companies’ equipment are not compatible with each other. Therefore the iClicker receiver on my computer will not detect signals from other brands of clickers.

What do I do with my old Turning Point or eInstruction CPS clickers?

When you get an iClicker 2, you can get a $10 rebate for your old clickers. Click here for the rebate offer on the iClicker website. Click here for the actual form that you print, fill out and mail back.

You have to use this rebate within 30 days of purchasing your iClicker 2. You must include the rebate form, original bookstore receipt for your iClicker 2, and the original UPC tags (barcode proof of purchase from the box) of your new iClicker 2. On your rebate form, you have to include the serial number of your new iClicker 2 AND the serial number of your old CPS or Turning Point clicker.  See the rebate form link for more details and pictures of serial number from the various clickers.

You do NOT have to mail them your old clicker. You can either keep it or bring it to the SFSU bookstore for them to properly recycle it for you.

Are iClicker 1 eligible for this rebate too?

Yes, even though you can continue to use the iClicker 1 in our class, you may choose to get the new iClicker 2 and return the iClicker 1 for a rebate.

What happens if my iClicker 2 becomes defective partway through the semester?

First, try changing the batteries. If that doesn’t work, bring it back to the bookstore for an exchange. Register your new clicker with the new serial number through the iClicker website link above.

Administrative Questions

Can you schedule your classes for later in the day?  8AM is really early!

Nope, classes are scheduled very tightly for the large auditoriums therefore this class has been offered at 8 AM for years now, and would be very difficult to change. Wish I could sleep in too.

Is your class offered in the Summer?

Yes, it is scheduled to be offered in Summer of 2012, in session R3 (mid-July to mid-August). I will be teaching the course in the Summer.

How do I talk with you in person?

I can meet with you before or after any class.

How do I select Credit/No Credit as a grade option?

You can change it yourself at My SFSU.

What counts as “credit” in the Credit/No Credit option?

At least 70% in the class grade.

Attendance

Do you take attendance?

Yes, we will be taking attendance with the iClicker, so please make sure you purchase one from the SFSU bookstore and register it online (see instructions above) asap.

I missed classes last week, are you going to drop me from your class?

No, not if you only miss a few classes. You are responsible for dropping yourself from the class if you no longer want the class. If you are still on my roster at the end of the semester but have done none of the assignments, you will receive an F.

I missed class last week; can I get notes from you or your TAs?

No, you need to get copies of notes from other people in the class.

Are your notes posted online somewhere?

No, come to class to take notes. In addition to the outline notes presented on Power Point, I say a lot more to clarify the points so you get a lot more out of lecture by being there and listening. Let’s face it – if you could download notes from class, you wouldn’t show up to class!

Books

I still have not gotten a class reader yet; where can I get one?

At Copy Edge located at 1508 Ocean Ave (cross Miramar). Call 415-587-5345 to reserve a copy. The cost is $35.

Do you have the required reading on reserve at the library?

Yes, there are copies of the required Elia/Chen textbook on 2 hour reserve. The class reader and the student study guide for the Elia book are NOT on reserve. The reserve book room has been moved to HSS 102 during the library construction.

Dr. Roof / Agree-Disagree Papers

What is a Zeus form that we have to turn in with our papers?

A Zeus form is a type of scantron form used for testing. For paper, we use it as a receipt that you turned one in. For exams, you will be using the same type of form for your midterm and final exams. It's a full page white sheet with green ink and the bubbles that you fill in with your #2 pencil. They can be purchased from the bookstore. For papers, just write your name and SFSU ID #, no need to bubble in.

What should the heading of my paper include?

Very simple: your initials, your full SFSU ID # (not social security #!), SXS/PSY 320, Spring 2012

Sample:

 Initials, SFSU ID

 SXS/PSY 320, Spring 2012

                                                         Title

Start your essay here - blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. ....................

Can my Dr. Roof or Agree/Disagree paper be longer than 4 pages?

Yes, you can write slightly more than 4 pages, but if you have much more, you can probably make your thoughts more concise. You won't be penalized for exceeding the page number requirement, but try to keep to around 4.5-5 pages max.

What do you mean that the citations have to come from 4 “different” sources?

What counts as a different source would be different articles in the reader, different articles in the anthology, or different dated lectures. For example, all 4 of your citations can be from the reader, as long as they are different articles. Most students choose to include a mix of quotes or paraphrases from lecture, anthology and the reader.

How do I cite for the agree/disagree& Dr. Roof  papers?

The simplest citation for lecture would be to put the date of lecture in parenthesis at the end of the sentence. For readings, put the authors and page number at the end of the sentence in parenthesis. Ex.: (Lecture, 2/6/12), (Elia/Chen, p. 42) You do not have to use APA or MLA styles citations or footnotes.

How do I cite quotes from lectures?

Simply say in your sentence, "According to lecture....", put in your quote or paraphrase, then put the date of the lecture in parenthesis at the end of the sentence.

Can I cite from readings that are assigned from future lectures in my papers?

Yes, you may find articles in the reader for future topics that may be useful for papers due before we cover those topics.

Can I use an outside source to cite for my papers other than the reader and the textbook?

I prefer that you use the resources assigned to the class, but if there's an especially good article, you may use it with permission from me (let me see it) and with a copy of the article attached to your paper when you turn it in. If you must use an outside source article, make it your 5th citation.

Can I respond in the first person (using "I" or "me") in my Dr. Roof and Agree/Disagree papers?

Yes, because you will be incorporating your own personal experiences into the paper, it's much more natural to write using I or me. In the Dr. Roof letters, it's also to address the letter-writer as "you" as well.

How will I be graded on my Dr. Roof / Agree-Disagree paper?

Every paper will have a grade sheet attached to it. Below is a sample grade sheet with the criteria. Use this as a guide and checklist when writing your paper.

Grading Guidelines for Agree/Disagree & Dr. Roof Paper

Thesis

-For the agree/disagree paper, you should be able to tell whether they are agreeing or disagreeing with the statement they picked. Although they don’t have to use the phrasing “I agree with” or “I disagree with” explicitly, you should be able to figure out which side they are supporting easily. The thesis should also very briefly summarize the students’ strongest arguments for why they picked a particular side.

- For the Dr. Roof paper, the thesis should be the main piece/s of advice the student is giving to the letter writer about what to do about their relationship.

All supporting paragraphs after the thesis should support this main piece of advice. I have ended each of the Dr. Roof letters with a few questions from Alex,

Jamie or Chris. Students should use these questions as guidelines for framing their advice.

-a thesis statement is a sentence (or 2) that expresses the main ideas of the paper and answers the question or questions posed by the paper.  Generally, a

thesis statement appears at the end of the first paragraph of an essay.

- A good thesis should be able to tell a reader should be able to tell the reader what your entire paper is about in one well constructed sentence.

-if paper does not have a thesis, he/she receives 0 points.  If it is weak or difficult to understand, take off 2 points or so, based on your judgment.

Strength of Argument

-Points are determined on the basis of how well their paper argues and supports their thesis.

9-10=outstanding paper, writer strongly argued and supported thesis

7-8= writer argued and supported thesis

6=very good paper, writer somewhat argued and supported thesis

5=average paper

0-3=poor paper, writer did not support thesis

-whether you personally agree or disagree with their opinion must not impact the amount of points given for this section.

Quality of Content

-the quality of writing in the paper

-do the paragraphs flow?  Is the paper full of run-on sentences?  If so, deduct points.

Followed Assignment Guidelines:

-For the agree/disagree paper: Students must pick & support one side. They must clearly either agree or disagree with the statement, and not argue both sides.

They must stay on topic.

-For the Dr. Roof paper: Students must address the questions asked by the letter writer. Though it’s best to start the essay with Dear Jamie, Dear Chris, or Dear Alex

and end with “Sincerely Dr. Roof”, we will not deduct points if the essay is not formatted as a letter. It’s OK (and most natural in a letter) to use “I” and “you”.

Personal Experience

-at least 1 personal example

-can be an example of a friend

-must be developed (ie description should be at least a few sentences.  If the paper only briefly mentions an example, take off a couple of points).

Correct grammar and spelling

-take off 1 point for every 2-3 grammatical/spelling errors

-use your judgment if it’s a re-occurring mistake (misuse of semi-colon, misspelling girl friend over and over, etc.)

Citations

-take off 1 point per citation if it is not adequately cited (at least author/source and date).

- citations from reading or lecture must support their point, and not just be some random quote that doesn’t fit into what they are talking about.

Students need to have a minimum of 4 citations. They can have more than 4 citations, and can cite the same source 2-3 times, as long as they have additional

citations using different sources. The citations have to come from different sources. Different sources can be different articles in the reader, 4 different dated

lectures, different articles in the anthology. That's why you all have copies of the reader and anthology - you can reference the page number that they cited and

verify that they are citations from different articles.

Students can repeat a source if they have more than 4 citations, and at least 4 citations are from different sources. Students can also use an outside source

as a 5th citation, as long as they have attached a copy of the article from which they are citing.

Here's a sample of what can count as 4 different sources for citations:

  • quotes from 4 different dated lectures
  • 4 different articles from the reader
  • 4 different articles from the anthology
  • 1 lecture, 2 reader cites from 2 different articles, 1 from anthology
  • Other combos

What exactly do you mean by "proof reading present" under the Mechanics section?

It means that it's obvious that you took the time to make sure that you've read over your paper before you turn it in, correcting any spelling or grammar errors.

I couldn’t make it to class on the day the paper’s due, can I put it in your mailbox or slip it under your office door?

No, papers are only accepted during class time. If you cannot make it to class, hold onto your paper till the next class. 10 points will be deducted for each class meeting that it’s late. If you know ahead of time you can’t make it to class on a paper due date, have someone turn it in for you or turn it in early. You must turn the paper in to either me or one of my TAs so consider any paper left in mailboxes or under doors lost.

Article Critique

How should I select an article?

The best method is to look at the schedule in the syllabus to see which topic interests you the most. I will be using many of your articles in future readers so make sure they can fit under a topic currently covered by the class. You can physically go to a library that subscribes to a lot of different magazines, and you can find an article and photocopy it. If you're used to doing research online, you can go to the SFSU online databases, and search that way. The article must be dated and previously published in a paper format.

How do I search online?

You will need to sign in with your SFSU ID and your library Personal Identification Number (PIN). Here’s the link to get your library PIN:

http://opac.sfsu.edu/screens/viewinfo.html

.

If you know the name of the magazine you’d like to look up, go to this link:   http://sfx.calstate.edu:9005/sfsu-e-collection/e-journals-A.html

If you want to search by keywords, go to this link: http://0-www.lexis-nexis.com.opac.sfsu.edu/universe

** Be sure to save a copy of your article by cutting and pasting it into a Word doc. Bookmarking the link on these search websites may only save the article temporarily.

What should the heading of my paper include?

Very simple: Your initials, your full SFSU ID # (not social security #!), SXS/PSY 320, Spring 2012

It says on the grade sheet:  “Legible copy of the article    * print-out / photocopy / original article is attached”                                         __

Does that mean you want ALL of these copies for our article?: A print-out/photocopy/AND original article?  or just one of them?

A slash means "or" so it's just one of these formats. For example, if you are doing an article you got from the library, you can't rip out the original pages, so you'll be turning in a photocopy. If you bought the magazine, you can turn in the actual magazine pages. If you did an online library search, it'll be a printout of the article in either a PDF format (preferred) or the full text format.

I've addressed all the questions in the Article Critique, but I still haven't filled 2 pages; what else should I talk about?

Review the article as a consumer. Is the article appealing? Good layout, good graphics, use of colors, professional looking? If they have pictures of people, is a diversity of people (different races, age, sexual orientation etc....) depicted? What are the author’s qualifications in making their statements? Does the author have any biases? Just look at the article critically. You can add any additional observations to your report as long as you address the basic questions in the syllabus.

Do I turn in the Article Critique with a Zeus form?

Yes

What is a Zeus form that we have to turn in with our papers?

A Zeus form is a type of scantron form used for testing. For paper, we use it as a receipt that you turned one in. For exams, you will be using the same type of form for your midterm and final exams. It's a full page white sheet with green ink and the bubbles that you fill in with your #2 pencil. They can be purchased from the bookstore. For papers, just write your name and SFSU ID #, no need to bubble in.

Health Workshop click here for Schedule

How do I sign up for a workshop (worth 5% of the grade)?

The health workshops are offered by the student health services. You must sign up for a workshop; no drop-ins on the day of the workshop. Your name will be on an attendance list for that particular workshop.

How will you know that I've participated in a health workshop?

The attendance sheet that you sign at the workshop will be forwarded to me at the end of the semester. You will be asked for your full name, SFSU ID #, and which course you wish to get credit for (HED 320).  I will NOT get this list before the end of the semester, so please don't email me asking if I already gave you credit right after you attend. You will be able to check if you got credit for the workshop at around the time of the final under the "Class Grades" section of this website.

I’m enrolled in both your SXS/PSY 320 and HED 320 courses. Both require a workshop at the student health center. Can I get credit for two classes with one workshop, or do I have to do 2 workshops?

Sorry, you have to do 2 workshops. The workshops are fun and informative so I hope you don't mind attending two.

Are there alternatives to attending a health workshop?

You can do a nutrition assessment or an appointment with a sexuality PEACH peer educator to get credit for the health workshop.

Elia Study Guide

Can I photocopy the Elia study guide to turn in for credit in the class (worth 5% of class grade)?

NO, photocopies of the study guide will not receive credit.

Do we write our initials or our full names on the study guides to turn in?

Yes, our final in on Monday, May 14, 2012 from 8-10 AM in McKenna Theater.

What is a "Zeus form"?

A Zeus form is a type of scantron form used for testing. It's a full page white sheet with green ink and the bubbles that you fill in with your #2 pencil. They can be purchased from the bookstore. It's very important you use the right form; otherwise the machine used to grade your test will not be able to read your answers.

What is the best strategy for studying for the exam?

Actually, coming to class regularly and taking good notes serve as the best strategy. In fact, I tell you actual test questions during lectures;  I often point out specific vocabulary terms or statistics that I want you guys to know.

What percentage of the questions will be from lecture and from reading?

80%-85% of the test questions on both the midterm and final are from lecture notes (including video clips). The remaining 15%-20% will be questions from the Class Reader and questions lifted straight from the Elia Study Guide.

How can I check my exam grades in the class?

They will be posted on this website under “Class Grades” listed in alphabetical order by student ID numbers.

How long after an exam will I be able to check my grade?

Your test scores will be available by 11pm of the day you took the test, as long as you’ve bubbled your SFSU ID, the course sort # and the test ID # correctly on your Zeus form. If your test score is not list, it is because you’ve made a bubbling error. Your Zeus form will have to fixed and re-run through the grading machine. Your score posting will be delayed if you’ve made an error on your form..

I’m an ESL student, can I bring a dictionary to the exams?

No, in many cases, the question is asking you to define a term that was presented in class so bringing a dictionary would give you the answer to the question and that would be cheating.

Does the final cover material from just the midterm on or from the whole semester?

The whole semester, but ~75% of the questions will be on material presented from the midterm on.
