How do I register my iClicker
2 into the class?
Click on this link for the iLearn iClicker registration. Follow the instructions for registering your clicker. Check with Ivy if you have any problems.
I have an iClicker 1 from a previous semester. Can I use it for the
class?
Yes, use the same registration procedure as the iClicker 2 above. The Clickers must be registered again at
the beginning of every semester.
I have another brand of clickers: Turning Point or eInstruction
CPS. Can I use it for the class?
No, unfortunately, the different clicker companies’
equipment are not compatible with each other.
Therefore the iClicker receiver on my computer will
not detect signals from other brands of clickers.
What do I do with my old Turning Point or eInstruction
CPS clickers?
When you get an iClicker 2, you can
get a $10 rebate for your old clickers. Click here for the rebate
offer on the iClicker website. Click here for the actual form
that you print, fill out and mail back.
You have to use this rebate within 30 days of purchasing your iClicker 2. You must include the rebate form, original bookstore receipt for your iClicker 2, and the original UPC tags (barcode proof of purchase from the box) of your new iClicker 2. On your rebate form, you have to include the serial number of your new iClicker 2 AND the serial number of your old CPS or Turning Point clicker. See the rebate form link for more details and pictures of serial number from the various clickers.
You do NOT have to mail them your old clicker. You can either keep it or bring it to the SFSU bookstore for them to properly recycle it for you.
Are iClicker 1 eligible for this rebate too?
Yes, even though you can continue to use the iClicker 1 in our class, you may choose to get the new iClicker 2 and return the iClicker
1 for a rebate.
What happens if my iClicker 2 becomes defective partway through the semester?
First, try changing the batteries. If that doesn’t work,
bring it back to the bookstore for an exchange. Register your new clicker with
the new serial number through the iClicker website
link above.
Administrative Questions
Is your class offered in the summer?
A small section (50 students) of HED 320 is offered in
session R1 (mid-June to mid-July) of summer, taught by Dr. John Elia. I do not teach HED 320 in the summer.
How do I talk with you in person?
I can meet with you after any class. If after class does not work for you, you
can email me to make an appointment at ivychensfsu@gmail.com
How do I select Credit/No Credit as a grade
option?
Change it yourself online at my sfsu.
What counts as “credit” in the Credit/No Credit option?
At least 70% in the class grade.
Attendance
Do you take attendance?
Yes, we will be taking attendance with the iClickers, so please make sure you purchase one from the
SFSU bookstore and register it online (see instructions above) asap.
I missed classes last week, are you going to drop me from your class?
No, not if you only miss a few classes. If I see from the
attendance sheet that you’ve never come to class or hasn’t come in a while in
the first few weeks of classes, I’ll drop you to avoid needing to give you an
“F” at the end of the semester because you’re still enrolled.
I missed class last week; can I get notes from you or your TAs?
No, you need to get copies of notes from other people in the
class.
Are your notes posted online somewhere?
No, come to class to take notes. In addition to the outline
notes presented on Power Point, I say a lot more to clarify the points so you
get a lot more out of lecture by being there and listening. Let’s face it – if
you could download notes from class, you wouldn’t show up to an 8AM class!
Books
I still have not gotten a class reader yet; where can I get one?
At Copy Edge located at
Do you have the required reading on reserve?
Yes, there are several copies of the Elia
textbook and of the Crooks/Baur "Our
Sexuality" textbook on 2 hour reserve. The class reader and the student
study guide for the Elia book are NOT on reserve. The reserve book room has been
moved to HSS 102 during the library construction.
Do I need the study guide for the
Crooks and Baur textbook?
No, you do not need the crooks/baur study guide. You only need the student workbook that comes bound with the Elia/ Angelo anthology. Is there an option to RENT Crooks & Baur rather than buying?
YES, student
can rent the textbook through CengageBrain. Here is a
direct link: www.cengagebrain.com/isbn/0495812943.
This link also has eBook, eChapters, and loose-leaf
options. The Crooks & Baur book will be more
important during the 2nd half of the semester when we cover the
biological material.
Elia Study Guide
Can I photocopy the Elia study guide to turn in
for credit in the class (worth 5% of class grade)?
NO, photocopies of the study guide will not receive credit.
Do we write our initials or our full names on the study guides to turn in?
Full names and full SFSU ID # on a big sticker label or a
permanent marker placed on the OUTSIDE of your workbook cover.
Do we all the chapters in the workbook?
You have to do the T/F, multiple choice, study questions and discussion questions for all the chapters EXCEPT chapters 15 & 25, which we do not cover in class.
For the study questions & discussion questions, do I have to use full sentences?
No, you can answer in phrases or outline form.
I
started my "Sex Education" paper, and I am struggling with ideas. I
didn't really get any false
information.... Are there any other things that I could put in my paper? I just don't feel like I have enough
information to fill up 5 pages!
The paper's not just about false info, though that amounts to most of sex
education for many people. It's really about how you learned about sex. Now as
an adult, you obviously know about sex, relationships, anatomy, but how did you
learn all this stuff? Family (not just parents), your friends, magazines you read, 1st sexual relationship?
Try answering these questions to jog your memory:
How did you learn where babies really came from?
How did you first learn about what a period is?
What was the first sexist comment you've ever heard and how it you react?
When was the first time you ever saw a condom?
How were gay and lesbian people explained to you?
What kind of actual formal sex education did you have?
What kinds of advise did you get before going on your
first date?
How did you learn about masturbation, and whether or not girls do it?
What is a Zeus form that we have to turn in with our papers?
A Zeus form is a type of scantron form used for testing. for paper, we use it as a receipt that you turned one in. For exams, you will be using the same type of form for your midterm and final exams. It's a full page white sheet with green ink and the bubbles that you fill in with your #2 pencil. They can be purchased from the bookstore.
How should I structure my Sex "Education" paper?
Be sure to write your paper as a college-level English essay, with a general thesis for the entire paper and topic sentences for each main paragraph. Since the paper is about how you learned about sex and sexuality, you can write one or two paragraphs on each of the main sources of sexual information such as your family, the media (including any influential book, movie or music), your friends, your religion, your school, and early relationships. OR you can structure your paper chronologically explaining how the various sources of info influenced you from early childhood through late childhood through your teen years through early adulthood. Of course, you should write in the first person (using "I" and "me") since this is your story.
Do I need to cite any sources for the Sex "Education" paper? How do I cite for the agree/disagree paper?
Citations are not necessary for your first paper. If you wish to include lecture material or reading material, that would be OK as well. The simplest citation for lecture would be to put the date of lecture in parenthesis at the end of the sentence. For readings, put the authors and page number at the end of the sentence in parenthesis. Ex.: (lecture, 2/7/12), (Elia/Angelo, p. 42)
What should the heading of my paper include?
Very simple: your initials, your full SFSU ID # (not social security #!), HED 320, Spring 2012

For the agree/disagree paper, what do you mean that the citations have to come from 5 “different” sources?
What counts as a different source would be different articles in the reader, different articles in the anthology, different chapters from Crooks & Baur or different dated lectures. For example, all 5 of your citations can be from the reader, as long as they are different articles. Most students choose to include a mix of quotes or paraphrases from lecture, anthology and the reader.
How
do I cite for the agree/disagree paper?
The simplest citation for lecture would be to put the date of lecture in parenthesis at the end of the sentence. For readings, put the authors and page number at the end of the sentence in parenthesis. Ex.: (lecture, 3/6/12), (Elia/Angelo, p. 42) You do not have to use APA or MLA styles citations or footnotes.

Citations
-take
off 1 point per citation if it is not adequately cited (at least author/source
and date).
-
citations from reading or lecture must support their
point, and not just be some random quote that doesn’t fit into what they are
talking about.
Students need to have a minimum of 5 citations. The
citations have to come from different sources. Different sources can be
different articles in the reader, 5 different dated lectures, different
articles in the anthology, or different articles on the class website. TAs will
reference the page number that students cited and verify that they are
citations from different articles.
Here's a sample of various combinations that count
as 5 different sources for citations:
·
quotes from 5 different dated lectures
·
5 different articles from the reader
·
5 different chapters from Crooks/Baur “Our Sexuality”
·
2 lectures, 1 anthology cite, 2 reader cites from 2
different articles,
·
Other combinations
Students can repeat a source if they have more than
5 citations, and at least 5 citations are from
different sources. Students can also use an outside source as a 6th citation,
as long as they have attached a copy of the article from which they are citing.
I
couldn’t make it to class on the day the paper’s due, can I put it in your
mailbox or slip it under your office door?
No, papers are only accepted during class time. If you
cannot make it to class, hold onto your paper till the next class. 10 points
will be deducted for each class meeting that it’s late. If you know ahead of
time you can’t make it to class on a paper due date, have someone turn it in
for you or turn it in early. You must turn the paper in to either me or one of
my TAs so consider any paper left in mailboxes or under doors lost.
Health Workshop– click here for Schedule
How do I sign up for a workshop (worth 5% of the grade)?
The health workshops are offered by the student health services. You must sign up for a workshop; no drop-ins on the day of the workshop. Your name will be on an attendance list for that particular workshop.
How will you know that I've participated in a health workshop?
The attendance sheet that you sign at the workshop will be forwarded to me at the end of the semester. You will be asked for your full name, SFSU ID #, and which course you wish to get credit for (HED 320). I will NOT get this list before the end of the semester, so please don't email me asking if I already gave you credit right after you attend. You will be able to check if you got credit for the workshop at around the time of the final under the "Class Grades" section of this website.
I’m enrolled in both your SXS/PSY 320 and
HED 320 courses. Both require a workshop at the student health center. Can I
get credit for two classes with one workshop, or do I have to do 2 workshops?
Sorry, you have to do 2 workshops. The workshops are fun and informative so I hope you don't mind attending two.
Are there alternatives to attending a health workshop?
You can do a nutrition assessment or an appointment with a sexuality PEACH peer educator to get credit for the health workshop.
What is a "Zeus form"?
A Zeus form is a type of scantron form used for testing. It's a full page white sheet with green ink and the bubbles that you fill in with your #2 pencil. They can be purchased from the bookstore. It's very important you use the right form; otherwise the machine used to grade your test will not be able to read your answers.
Is the final exam during "finals week"?
Yes, the final is on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, 8-10am in Knuth hall
What is the best strategy for studying for the exam?
Actually, coming to class regularly and taking good notes serve as the best strategy. In fact, I tell you actual test questions during lectures; I often point out specific vocabulary terms or statistics that I want you guys to know.
What percentage of the questions will be from lecture and from reading?
80%-85% of the test questions on both the midterm and final are from lecture notes (including video clips). The remaining 15%-20% will be questions from the Crooks/Baur & the Class Reader and questions lifted straight from the Elia-Angelo Study Guide.
How
can I check my exam grades in the class?
They will be posted on this website under “Class Grades”
listed in alphabetical order by student ID numbers.
How long after an exam will I be able to check my grade?
Your test scores will be available by 11pm of the day you
took the test, as long as you’ve bubbled your SFSU ID,
the course sort # and the test ID # correctly on your Zeus form. If your test
score is not list, it is because you’ve made a bubbling error. Your Zeus form
will have to fixed and re-run through the grading machine. Your score posting
will be delayed if you’ve made an error on your form.
Does the final cover material from just the midterm on or from the whole
semester?
The final is 100 questions on material presented from midterm
materials onto the last lecture.
I’m
an ESL student, can I bring a dictionary to the exams?
No, in many cases, the question is asking you to define a
term that was presented in class so bringing a dictionary would give you the
answer to the question and that would be cheating.
Extra Credit
Is there any?
No
