HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS AND SOCIETIES

For those students who plan on having a career in History, membership in a historical association or society can be beneficial.

In the short term, many of the associations and societies offer scholarships and other benefits. Membership in these associations will put you in touch with like-minded professionals, and they can be helpful later, when you are looking for employment.

Historians based in the United States are assumed to be members of the American Historical Association. This is the best source you will find on current trends in research, policy issues, and employment opportunities. Similarly, anyone teaching American history is assumed to be a member of the Organization of American Historians, and for the same reasons.

For a detailed list of historical associations and societies, please see the Directory of Affiliated Societies on the American Historical Association's website: http://www.historians.org/affiliates/
