Dear students,

The History Students Association, in its current incarnation, was created in 2005 in order to facilitate communication between history students and the faculty, enhance the history learning experience, further the goals of history students, and for social interaction and entertainment among history students.

In addition to regular meetings, HSA holds many events — like movie nights — throughout the year. All students with an interest in history — not just history majors — are encouraged to join us.

Members are welcome to become further involved by attending monthly meetings, running for office, or volunteering as an event coordinator. Our elections occur yearly and everyone — officer or no — has a voice in our organization.

Please feel free to email us at any time at hsa@mail.sfsu.edu and have a wonderful year.

Yours Sincerely,

Thomas Strange
(HSA President)

HSA'S ANNUAL HISTORY CONFERENCE

CALL FOR PAPERS:
"On the Margins of History: Expanding Subjects, Exploring Methods"

The 1950s and 1960s heralded significant disciplinary transformations, providing new possibilities for historians to shift their analytical gaze away from dominate historical narratives and toward marginalized historical actors, groups, spaces, and themes. Notions of self-determination and equality in the emerging post-colonial world gave impetus to new currents of scholarly inquiry aimed at excavating submerged voices from the past and representing groups that had previously been denied historical agency. In doing so, historians needed new tools to reconstruct and reconceptualize pasts not originally intended to be remembered or represented. Subsequently, ways of knowing and approaching the past changed and fostered the formation of new disciplines and subdisciplines as well as interdisciplinary collaborations in order to meet this task. ... The purpose of this conference is both to continue and contest scholarship on the margins.
