Personal Statement

As a young boy growing up in the Philippines, I experienced life in a developing nation where people are engulfed in poverty.  No matter how hard people work, the country’s pollution, crime, and scarce resources make it difficult to rise above the poverty level.  People trying to survive day-to-day often lose hope, creating a more depressed community.

In the U.S., I have volunteered and worked with youth and families in underserved communities for the past eleven years.  The young people I met while counseling and mentoring could not see beyond their current lives to want a better one.  I wondered how people who spend each day struggling to survive could create and implement a plan for success.

I dedicated my life’s work in helping people improve their current situations and plan for better futures.  After years of connecting with and serving youth and families in under-resourced communities, I have witnessed people’s resilience and strength change lives.  In a field with such high turnover rate, these successes have driven me to be persistent and to persevere in a career of public service.
