Drosophila Systematics and Evolution
Most of my research has concerned the phylogeny and evolution of fruitfly genus Drosophila. My research has focused on the D. virilis-repleta groups, with a special emphasis on the D. virilis species group. In the past, I worked with Dr. Scott Pitnick (Syracuse University) on the evolution of giant sperm in the genus Drosophila, and with Dr. John Jaenike (University of Rochester) on the evolution of mushroom feeding D. quinaria species group. I am continuing the study of the higher level systematics of Drosophila with Dr. David Houle and Dr. Kim van der Linde (both Florida State Univeristy).
Drosophila bifurca has the worlds largest known sperm. It measures 58.3 mm in lenth when unraveled (Pitnick, Spicer, and Markow, 1995).
