What Is a Student Mentor?
Student mentors are upper-division or graduate students who act as guides, friends, and role models to the proteges. Both the faculty and student mentors are interested in ensuring that proteges have a successful
academic and social experience during their first year at San Francisco State University. A student mentor, who ideally has excellent social and communication skills, serves as a guide for success in a university setting, offering benefits such as:
- A supportive relationship with the proteges
- Options and alternatives to proteges'
questions and concerns
- A resource for appropriate campus referrals
- Peer support and sincere recognition for the proteges' academic goals and achievements
