For most students, the first year at the university is the most critical period. To help students successfully integrate into the university, the Faculty/Student Mentorship Program, a college-based academic retention program, was created in Fall 1988.
Studies on college retention show that interaction between students, their peers, and faculty have proven to be effective in retention, especially of underrepresented, educationally and economically disadvantaged students. Retention and assisting students in their personal development and academic performance, by offering services such as drop-in tutoring and advising, are the primary goals of the FSMP.
The FSMP encourages students to establish mentoring relationships with peer groups and faculty who share similar experiences and values. We provide opportunities for proteges to meet with mentors on a regular basis to discuss topics ranging from college-related matters to career goals. These relationships provide students with the encouragement and guidance they need to help them survive their first year at San Francisco State University and make the most of their college experience.
