One of the themes that comes up
again and again in Social Studies is migration. In the 1800s, 80%
of the population of the United States lived within fifty miles
of the Atlantic Ocean. Over the next 50 years, that statistic changed
as people left the security and comforts of their homes and set
out for the unknown, the west. Students will be involved in a group
research project and produce a multimedia presentation, a newscast
and a letter to answer this question This unit on Westward Expansion
was designed to allow students to discover on their own the reasons
that people moved West. It is an example of constructivist learning
with teacher guidance. The unit starts with a general Why move West?
Students will work collaboratively in groups of four to discover
the answer to this question. They will be given the resources that
they need to answer the question and put together a presentation
that shows the answer to this question.
