Subject Matter Competency

You may also have heard this process called "Transcript evaluation," or "PRAXIS/SSAT Waiver."

There are two ways to attain Subject Matter Competency:

1. Take and pass both the Praxis II and SSAT in English Languages and Literature (now known collectively as CSET).

**OR**

2. Have your transcripts evaluated by an English Department advisor, and complete all required coursework to be certified.

Note: It's a good idea to get an appointment with an advisor at least one semester before you wish to apply to the credential program. Many students, even those with B.A. degrees in English, find that they need to complete several more courses before they are certified "competent" and can begin student teaching.

Here are links to the worksheets used to assess subject matter competency. Depending on your concentration during your undergraduate career, you'll want to look at a different version of the form. All programs require the same core of literature courses, but each has a different breadth requirement. Click on the link to see the form and/or print it out:
