following program provides certification of Subject Matter Competency through
the state approved subject matter program in English at SFSU. Other
institutions may offer different approved programs to meet Subject Matter
certification. If you find you are missing one or more of the requirements in
this program, you may complete the specific courses or their equivalents at
SFSU or elsewhere (with approval of an English credential adviser at SFSU), OR

The
following course is also recommended to satisfy requirements for admission to
the Secondary Education Department, Single Subject Credential Programs:
ENG
678 . Early Field Experience. Provides 45 hours in a school
placement as a volunteer/observer, with a 2-hour weekly seminar. Satisfies the
Early Field Experience requirement for your application. May be taken during
the semester you apply to the program. (Online arrangements possible in case
of conflict with other required courses.) Classroom placements and S.F.
District clearance are provided in the course: no need to apply to S.F. School
Volunteers or any other programs. Please obtain an updated TB test.
In
addition, three required courses, usually scheduled for the 1st
semester of the credential program, may be taken prior to admission to the
program:
ITEC 712. Use of Technology.
SED 720. Reading in Secondary Schools.

650: Curriculum and Methods in English Lang Arts. (Subject
Matter Program must be complete, or consent of instructor)
ADVISING:
You
will need the signature of an English Credential Adviser on your Subject
Matter Certification form, which you will find at the back of your application
packet for the Single Subject Credential Program at SFSU.
You may call 338-7401 for an appointment, or drop in on Academic
Advising Day at the beginning or end of any semester.
The instructor of the capstone course, 688, or the Field Experience
seminar, 678, may also sign this form for you.
Bring a print-out
of the program you are following. Enter in the left margin the courses from
your transcript which you believe will satisfy the requirements. Bring
unofficial copies of your transcripts from all post-secondary institutions.
(Your adviser will not be able to obtain these from other sources on campus.)
