History paper assignment
Your third major paper is an exploration of the migration and cultural changes in your own family and the experience of two other foreign students. You should use your own memory and formal and informal interviews and discussions with two other foreign students that cover the points listed below. Draw from Ancheta, the immigration-related web sites and other class readings where necessary. The paper must be typed, double-spaced and a minimum of 1000 words and a maximum of 1500 words. See below for proper citation of interview sources.
Key points:
1. Where are you from? Where are the other interviewees from? What
are the social/cultural backgrounds of your family and their families?
2. When did you and they come to the US? Why did you and they come to the
US?
3. What are the adjustments you and they have made since coming to the US?
4. Be sure to explore change and continuity in the following: [example -
what is different between life - then vs. now - and what is similar?]
a) School experience
b) Living situations
c) Relationships with people
d) Values, customs, feelings, ideas
e) Languages
f) Friends and social life
5. What are the most important changes and continuities from their point
of view and from yours?
6. How has September 11, 2001 affected your stay in the U.S.?
7. Anything else you or they consider important.
The paper should include clear citations and references of your interview
sources [incl. information such as name of person interviewed, their relationship
to you, the place you conducted the interview and the date, etc.]. You may
also draw on other sources beyond interviews, including family photographs
and documents, but you must interview at least two other people. TIP
