Lau v. Nichols Assignment
For AAS 205 sections 1 & 3 - due Monday 11/5 or Tues 11/6 for sec. 3  in the beginning of class.
Minimum 750 words - typed double spaced.  No late papers will be accepted.

Drawing from your research, the Ancheta text, and the classroom debates on Lau v. Nichols, answer the following questions:

1. Describe the parties in the 1974 Lau v. Nichols case.

2. Explain the U.S. Supreme Courts legal analysis from in its Jan. 21, 1974 decision.  Make sure you discuss at least 2 main arguments made by each side of the debate.

3. Drawing from Ancheta's concept of 'difference inequality' [treating people different as if they were the same], give 2 examples from Chapter 5 of how the U.S. legal system has been ineffective in addressing racial and ethnic differences of communities.

4. From your own experiences, explain why you support or oppose 'bilingual education' in SF schools.

** Cite your sources and include a short bibliography at the end of your paper.  You must cite at least 2 sources, not including the course text.  One of your sources must not be an internet website.  For webpage sources give the full URL for the citation with full title of the webpage you used.  Use the proper citation format given on our course website.
