• Use the the Ancheta readings, class discussions, & the WWII loyalty questionnaire [click here for info] to reflect on your beliefs about U.S. citizenship. How does your image of a “loyal citizen” compare to that of the questionnaire?
• Briefly explain how Japanese Americans’ rights were gradually eroded (e.g., discrimination against land ownership and employment, declaration of military need, imposition of a curfew, routine searches) in the 4 decades prior to their internment. Ancheta's Chapters 1-3 and the timelines posted on the class website may be helpful here. How did this erosion lay the groundwork for internment?
• Discuss why West Coast Japanese Americans were interned and not those in Hawaii? In your answer you may want to reflect on the economic motivations for the internment.
• Drawing from class discussions about resistance, give examples of
the types of resistance shown in the 2 films [Unfinished Business and Rabbit
in the Moon]. According to the Rabbit in the Moon film, what role
did the JACL [Japanese American Citizens League] play during the internment
camp experience? Click
here for background info from the filmmakers. How do you think you
would respond if you and your family were imprisoned in concentration camps
in the U.S. and stripped of your basic constitutional rights and dignity?
