After reading the materials above and viewing the film - The Fall of the I-Hotel [AV #82372 - 59 minutes - Color - 1993]
Think about the following discussion questions:
1. Where was Manilatown in San Francisco once located? How large was it at its height? Who lived there?

2. What is ‘Urban Renewal’ or ‘redevelopment’? What institutions were involved? How did redevelopment impact Asian and other poor communities in SF?

3. What organizations formed to preserve the I-Hotel? How did they organize? For how long did they prevent the destruction of the I-Hotel?

4. What other neighborhoods and communities have been similarly impacted by redevelopment/urban renewal processes?

5. What do you think are the main lessons we can draw upon from the history of the I-Hotel struggle, and the Boston, Philadelphia and other community efforts to protect Asian American communities?
